Louise Messenger sings “Ella at Zardi’s”

September 13, 2019 - 7:30 pm

Bills Restaurant, Brewer St.

It's 1956, and you're all dressed up about to step into Zardi's Jazzland to spend an evening listening to the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald sing live.

For two week's over the summer of '56, Ella headlined this famous Hollywood nightspot. On the final night they rolled the tape and caught the whole gig - a rare glimpse into what it was like to be in an intimate jazz club with arguably the most famous jazz singer of them all - joking, forgetting words, taking requests, talking to the audience. Then for 60 years the tapes lie hidden in the vault at Verve records.

Join acclaimed jazz vocalist Louise Messenger as they recreate in it's entirety this magical lost Ella album. A night of swinging jazz not to be missed!

Kitty la Roar Trio

September 13, 2019 - 9:30 pm

Soho Theatre, Dean St.

“When Kitty sings, music stops to listen”

Stylish London singer Kitty LaRoar debuts her new trio at Soho Jazz Festival, singing, scatting and free-styling at the drums. The band will be showcasing original compositions from the album Valentine's Eve, as well as original lyrics to the music of Monk, Ellington, Strayhorn and Sonny Rollins.

Originally inspired by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, Kitty La Roar's unique talents are not just as silky voiced songstress, scat-singer and drummer. She has an spellbinding ability to freestyle lyrics to melody on the spot, telling stories that are not only relevant to the song she is singing, but often weaving in references to life, love, nature, politics, current events, and even to people in the audience. The trio performs highly original songs by Kitty and her pianist Nick Shankland and although the genre is clearly jazz, this unpredictable and eclectic music entrances and engages the audience.
